Enhancing Cognition and Specializing in the
Diagnosis and Treatment of
ADHD • Brain Injury • Cognitive Impairment • Dementia

The NeuroCognitive Institute (NCI) was established in 1994 and initially named the NeuroRehab Institute. Since this time, we have remained committed to our scientist-practitioner model upon which the institute was founded. This model requires that our doctors remain actively involved in research but from within a private practice setting. This gives our patients the exposure to recent and ongoing developments within the clinical neurosciences without the bureaucracy and interpersonal alienation often experienced at larger academic institutions.

Over the past two decades, we have become one of the primer centers in New Jersey for the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive and related neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders. Our Institute is staffed by some of the areas most knowledgeable clinical neuropsychologists, behavioral neurologists, clinical psychologists, cognitive therapists and we have on-site consulting physicians in internal medicine, cardiology, gerontology and hematology. We also have consulting case managers and social workers to help guide patients and family members in accessing valuable resources to help them cope more effectively with their disorders. We use a team oriented approach so new patients are often examined by multiple members of the team depending on the patient’s presenting symptomatology and problems.

Our team specializing in what we summarize as the A-D disorders:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
  • Brain Injury
  • Cognitive Impairment and
  • Dementia

All of these disorders share a commonality in that they are either directly or indirectly related to cortical dysfunction. Generally speaking the cortex is made up of the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes. Impairment of the cortex can result in a variety of cognitive, behavioral and emotional disorders. Cortical dysfunction can be diagnosed and treated.

Diagnostics
The diagnostic process is only as good as the techniques
and tools used to examine the patient. At our institute we

use precision diagnostics selecting neuro
diagnostic tests
that have the highest validity and reliability. Without

highly accurate and precise tests, even the most skilled

diagnostician would be at a disadvantage.

At the NCI we conduct most cortical testing on-site using neurological exams, computerized neuropsychological tests and quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) brain mapping. We also conduct Cognitive Event Related Potentials, Psychological, as well as, Academic/Educational and Vocational testing. These tests are non-invasive, can assess various functional abilities and not only localize cortical dysfunction, but can help us diagnose:

  • Age Related Cognitive Decline from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
  • The various sub-types of MCI
  • Diseases causing dementias
  • Cognitive, behavioral and emotional disorder resulting from brain injury
  • Attention Deficit Disorder and other Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Verbal and Non-verbal Learning Disabilities
  • Psychological from cortical disorders

Treatment & Consulting Services
We provide a comprehensive combination of traditional, alternative, and complementary, as well as experimental treatments not typically available at any other cognitive disorder specialty clinics. Some of these treatments and consultation options include:

Enhancing Cognition
For individuals with age related cognitive decline (ARCD) there is growing optimism. ARCD is an unfortunate but normal process. This process begins around the age of thirty-four, and each and every decade thereafter, certain cognitive functions decline reducing our overall level of cognitive efficiency and accuracy. Cognitive functions such as retrieval abilities, information processing and psychomotor speed, sustained attention, working memory and most executive system functions deteriorate with age.

Attenuating this process is a relatively new but rapidly growing area of cognitive neuroscience. With the aging of the world population and many individuals remaining in the workforce population long after age 65, there are many obvious reasons why ARCD has grabbed the attention of many researchers and the general public.

Our doctors and researchers at NCI have been and remain actively involved in ARCD research. At this point, there are some promising treatments that have become available and we are able to offer these cognitive enhancement strategies and treatment programs to those individuals who do not have a specific cognitive disorder, but want to either prevent or attenuate ARCD.

Accessing Diagnostic, Treatment and Consulting Services at The NCI
Currently the NCI only has two outpatient locations in central and northwestern New Jersey. For those patients and clients who are local to our practice locations we invite you to schedule a relatively quick but comprehensive evaluation.

For those individuals who are not able to visit us in person – our doctors do offer phone consultations at very reasonable rates to guide patients and clients. We understand it is difficult to separate treatments backed by sound scientific based data from the myths surrounding improving cognition. Although our phone consultations do not constitute a formal doctor-patient relationship they are a useful and cost-effective way to help patients, their family members and those individuals looking to enhancing their cognitive abilities.

Please call us at 973-601-0100 or email us.

We are confident we can provide the information and services patients need to accurately diagnosis and treat all types of cognitive disorders and improve overall cognitive functioning.
